The is an excellent book to prepare you for the SCJP certification exam though some of the sample questions are a bit too tricky. I read this book cover to cover multiple times and attempted to answer the questions at the end of each chapter. I was never able to answer all the questions correctly on the first try. You really have to know the material inside and out to get the right answers. I took all three of the 72-question timed mock exams scoring 60-70% each time. Today I took the actual exam and got 90% correct. I had been afraid I might not pass since I had passed by such a slim margin on the mock exams.
I also studied the Mughal and Rasmussen book which covered a lot of extra material not on the exam. The questions in the Mughal and Rasmussen book were of uneven quality - not all up to the high standards of this book.

Great reference covering the most recent technologies. I've been following the series since the 3rd edition and each one has been worth its weight in gold! If only Amazon knew, I would be willing to pay in excess of $200.00 for this! ;D My personal last edition was the 13th, so this will make a fine addition to the library.
I love how Scott covers the history, and even though there have been complaints on earlier editions of this inclusion of past technologies, it is valuable information.
This edition was a Christmas gift to my brother who is now getting into computer repair. After a few days, he is eating the book up alive! Amazon was great in its shipment and technically was not going to release it until a couple of days before Christmas, however they not only made an earlier release date but got it to me before Christmas. I'll be purchasing a copy for my self after this review!
If your in doubt as whether to purchase this, don't be. This is a very inexpensive way to add to your understanding, what could take you "forever" in your Google searches!

I love this book. It is full of real world examples, and Mike's writing is not dry like so many other A+ books I read. The CD is also great. I watched the videos, and did all the tests on the CD. What I did not like about the book is the pictures are black and white.

I used this book as part of my exam prep. Good intro to the topics, with somewhat more detail than is required in many areas. Better to have too much info than too little in this case, however.
Starting with this volume and moving on to the Sybex Security+ Study Guide, then Security+ 2008 In Depth, passed with 855/900.
As noted in other reviews, you should have some networking background before attempting this material, as it does not review those topics sufficiently for a beginner.

I used this book to study for my RHCE Exam in December of 2009. From what I have heard from this book and my personal experience, it is THE book to use for studying for the RHCE exam besides the material provided in the 300 course. The labs in the book were quite good, but I found that I had to do some extra steps to get my system to a point where I could execute the lab well. Figuring out how to get my system to that point were very good learning experiences, but they made me skim through labs since I didn't want to bother with the setup. It would have been very nice if they provided a pre-configured vm image of a similar release (like CentOS) that was preconfigured so that when you hit a lab, you had all of the necessary pieces, or at least build on the pieces from the previous labs.
NOTE: I mentioned in my title that the book is a bit out of date. From studying book I thought that I would have to configure a RHEL system from scratch (do an install, pick package groups, pick partition sizes, etc). Red Hat eliminated the installation portion of the exam in 2008 or 2009. The exam is now only a 3.5 hour session consisting of RHCT troubleshooting and RHCE system configuration.
